Whitney’s Dream
Whitney had been playing basketball since she was three years old. By seventh grade, Whitney was the star of the middle school basketball team. Even the coach admitted she was the best player and pretty fun to watch.
All through the season, Whitney had stayed on top of her game. She carefully trained and lifted weights. She could hardly wait for the winter tournament that was played each year. Teams from all over the county showed up to show their stuff.
In the last quarter of the championship game, Whitney found herself making more baskets than she had ever made before in a game. She found it hard to believe each time she glanced at the scoreboard.
Just then Whitney heard the whistle blow. She stopped dribbling the ball to look up. The referee called a foul on the opposing team and Whitney walked over to the foul line. Her first shot went up but the ball bounced off the rim. Her second shot went in with a swoosh!
On defense, Whitney was intense. She knew there were only minutes to go before the game would be over. They were down by one basket. She knew it could be done. The ball handler drove for the basket and Whitney went in to make her move. Just then the loud and shrill whistle blew. Whitney couldn’t bear to look up. In her peripheral vision, she saw the referee motion towards her. Whitney hung her head and exited the court.
