Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 8 (Fiction 1 - Mythology)

Dragons

Dragons are one of the best-known mythological creatures. Ancient cultures throughout the world wrote about these fire-breathing, mythical animals. Usually the beasts were described as having wings, reptile-looking features, and massive claws. Not only could they fly, but they could also breathe fire.

In some cultures, the dragon was portrayed as an evil monster. Heroes of Greek and Roman myths were often portrayed in battles fighting dragons. However, in other cultures, the dragon was a symbol of good. In ancient China, for example, the dragon was seen as a symbol representing good fortune, wealth, and happiness.

Dragons are still used as symbols today. They appear on everything from cartoons to jewelry. Many types of children’s toys feature various types of dragons. Some mythological creatures are only mentioned today if someone is studying ancient cultures, but the dragon has infused itself into modern-day culture. The dragon is one myth from the past that will not be forgotten.
