Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 8 (Fiction 6 - Fantasy)

The Last of the Unicorns

The small animal hid, frightened and alone. The unicorn was the last of his kind. Hunters were fast on his trail, and he had no idea where to go for help. All he knew was he could not run much longer. He was growing weaker by the moment, but if he gave up now, he knew he would die.

Hiding for the moment behind a large tree, the unicorn looked up, startled to see a small gnome sitting on the branch of the tree. He didn’t know if he could communicate with the gnome, but he knew he had to try.

The gnome’s eyes lit up with excitement when he realized he could understand the unicorn. He could feel all of his sorrow and all of his fear. He knew, without a doubt, that he could not let the hunters find the unicorn. Even if it cost him his own life, he vowed to the unicorn he would do everything he could to protect the majestic and magical beast.

Quickly and quietly, the gnome led the unicorn deeper into the woods. They covered their trail using magic dust so the hunters would be confused and unable to follow. They ran for days, resting only very little until they came to a huge waterfall. The gnome had heard stories that the place inside the forest existed, but he had never been brave enough to travel the great distance to find out if the stories were true. When he saw the waterfall, he hugged the neck of the unicorn and whispered in his ear that they had finally arrived.

The unicorn bent down on one knee, and motioned for the gnome to climb onto his back. He held on tight as they raced through the waterfall and came out on the other side.

The land that greeted them was magical indeed. The gnome knew he would never want to leave, and he was especially sure the unicorn would not want to go either, for there in a field just off to their left was a herd of unicorns.
